Suprisingly, boxing started in Greece in 1600 B.C. and it was introduces as an Olympiad sport in 688 B.C.. The ancients did not value beatings or knockouts in boxing, the aim was to remain un-injured until the opponent became exhausted and signalled defeat by raising two fingers. One fighter avoided hits for two days before his opponent gave up. The greatest boxer in history was Great Britain's Len Wickwar who, between 1928 and 1947, fought 463 fights. He also holds the records for the most wins (336) and most losses (127) of any boxer! Even though the boxing rings are square there called rings because in Ancient Rome, competitors had to stay in a circle drawn on the arena floor. They have been known as "rings" ever since...The fighter with the most fights without suffering a single loss was Hal Bagwell of Great Britain who finished his 10 year career (1938-1948) with 175 wins, 0 losses and 5 draws, Archie Moore holds the record for most knockouts during a career (145). Lamar Clark holds the record for the most consecutive knockouts, 44 in a row between 1958 and 1960.
Womens boxing first appeared in the Olympic Games at a demonstration fight in 1904, it was banned in most nations in the twentieth century. In 1997 Britian was supposed to hold its first womens boxing match between two thirteen year old girls but one withdrew from the fight so instead, the first boxing match was fought between two sixteen year old girls. In 1980 there were two twin sisters in California who were boxers. But most of the real boxing started to happen in the 90's. When womans boxing first came out it actually was getting way more attention from the media then mens boxing was.
